Rosa's Story
Rosa’s story happened 14 years ago. She discovered ‘Las Valientes’ and met Ana Serrano at the Vista Way shelter she was recommended to go to at the Vista Community Clinic. Rosa was not married to her children’s father but they did live together for quite some time prior to the violent incident. Ana helped Rosa find an affordable lawyer who allowed to pay his service in monthly payments.
The incident happened after she had returned with from the movies with a friend of the male sex with whom she had gone to the movies with her children. During this time she was trying to get back with her children’s father and he was waiting for her and their children at her house. That day they were intimate, allowing her to think that they had reconciled so she asked for $20 for their children’s milk. Instead of complying with her request he refused and told Ana that the children were her friend’s, the one she had gone to the movies with prior to being intimate with him. Rosa was angered by his allegation and requested $20 for their children’s milk again, clarifying that the children were his. He got violent and pushed her against the balcony of the house and she called the cops. He was arrested for 5-7 days and she placed a restraint order after who stole the car they both used. She was not able to do anything anything about the car because the title of the car was under his name. However, with the restraining order he was entitled to see his children but decided not to.
Even though her ex partner did not want to see the children when he was allowed to he demanded the custody of ‘his’ children. On the court day he did not show up, instead he has his wife be there instead, allowing Rosa to gain complete custody of their children. Her ex partners wife walked into the court room flaunting her newlywed ring and her status as his wife. Her ex partner was responsible foe paying child support for both of their children. Both of their children went to therapy and continue to go util this day. The oldest daughter does not contact her father what so ever.
During this whole process Ana was there to answer her questions, for moral support, and even gave her a car to drive. The car Ana gifted her was Ana’s own car. Rosa said that she is beyond thankful for that act of generosity because she says that there are a few people who are that selfless in this world. Rosa admires Ana’s strong and blunt character, she says it helped her become brave and gave her the tools that she needed to stand up for herself. She used to be afraid of randomly coming in contact with him during her daily routines at first, but she over came that fear. She saw him 4 years ago form a distance and they made eye contact but he looked down as if he were ashamed or sorry for what he had done to her and their children.
